FAQ

What is the Glowforge and who can use it?

What is the Glowforge Spark?

The Glowforge Spark is a desktop laser cutter and engraver available in the university makerspace. It allows students to cut, score, and engrave materials like wood, leather, and acrylic to make personalized projects, prototypes, or class assignments.

Who can use the Glowforge Spark?

All current students, faculty, and staff are welcome to use the Glowforge Spark after completing a brief orientation and safety training. Training ensures everyone understands safe setup, approved materials, and file preparation before using the equipment independently.

What can I do with the Glowforge?

What kinds of projects can I make?

Students commonly create:

If you can dream it, you can probably make it!

What materials are approved for use?

The Glowforge Spark can cut or engrave wood, acrylic, leather, cardboard, paper, and fabric.
To ensure safety, only approved or Glowforge Proofgrade® materials can be used. You can bring your own material if it meets the approved list—just ask a staff member to verify before cutting.

How big can my project be and what types of files do I need?

How big can my project be?

The Glowforge Spark’s work area fits materials up to about 12 inches wide by 6 inches tall (depending on thickness). If you’re working on a larger design, you can tile your cuts into multiple pieces or ask staff about using other Glowforge models on campus.

The Glowforge Spark accepts SVG, PNG, JPG, and PDF files. You can create your design in programs like:
